The ABC's of Sheepskin Footwear
Sheepskin footwear has unique properties shared by no other. They feel best against the bare foot. That is one of the reasons we always try to have you try them on barefoot. In addition to the plush comfort of the fleece on the foot, the hair follicles from the sheepskin "wicks" the moisture from the foot and sends it out the skin (which is why you don't use silicon, which clogs up the pores in the skin, to protect the footwear). There is air that circulates throughout the fleece, keeping the foot at body temperature, even in very cold conditions. The second reason you should try any sheepskin footwear on barefoot is that sheepskin has the ability to mold quickly to the foot and if stressed (by a wide or misshapen foot) will stretch and conform quickly. How the slipper or boot feels at first try is NOT how it will feel after two weeks of wear. Therefore, it is our responsibility to fit all sheepskin footwear "comfortably snug". A third, and often overlooked benefit of sheepskin footwear comes from the lanolin (found in many hand lotions) found in the skin. It helps keep the skin moist and healthy. Doctors and hospitals have long used sheepskin for healing purposes such as healing sandals for Diabetic patients with hard to heal foot ulcers to older bed-ridden patients to fight bed sores.

How do I wash these?
In cold water, by hand, with a soft brush and Ivory liquid or a mild shampoo. Wash the entire boot or slipper inside and out. Rinse it thoroughly and air dry in the shade. It is recommended to spray with a non-silicon suede protector afterwards. Minor surface dirt can be simply brushed off with a short napped nylon brush. Some boots and slippers are made in laminate form with sheepskin on the inside and some sort of leather out. These cannot be submerged in water. Surface washing is best for these.

What does Ugg mean?
Ugg Boots- The word "ugg" can be found in an Australian English dictionary. It means sheepskin boot. In Australia , any boot can have the word "ugg" on it. Here, in the U.S. and in many other countries the word Ugg® is trademarked by Deckers Footwear, owners of Teva and Simple footwear. Only boots produced for them can bear the word Ugg®. The brand is by far the best known but we believe it is the quality of the sheepskin rather than the label that will provide you with the most satisfaction.

What's the difference between the different boots I see people wearing?
There are primarily two different types and constructions in ugg boots. The original classic was introduced to the U.S. in the early 70's. The boot got its' origins as an after surf boot. The Aussie surfers would come out of the cold waters and immediately put on their ugg boots. It became the craze among surfers here and soon spread throughout beach communities. If the customer doesn't plan to take them to the snow, the classic ugg boot is their best bet. Many people use them only as slippers as well as outdoors. A characteristic of the classic ugg boot is its cemented-on sole. It is slipper-like in feel and the lightest weight of any of them. The disadvantage of the sole being lightweight is that it wears quickly, but the advantage is that a good shoe repair easily replaces the sole.

The second type of ugg boot is referred to as a "side wall stitch". That means that they have sewn a sole onto the upper. These are usually reinforced with cowhide suede at the toe area and are geared for non-skid situations, e.g. snow or slick surfaces. The Ugg® Ultra is an example of a sidewall stitch ugg boot. Since the vamp is taller and not quite as wide as the classic ugg style, many women prefer the look. The three disadvantages to this style is 1) due to the sewn-on molded sole, the boot is heavier than a classic ugg style 2) the heel will slip more in this type of construction 3) since the sole is sewn on, it is not resoleable. The three advantages to this construction is 1) the sole is more durable and much better in slippery conditions 2) the toe has a reinforced suede piece to prevent the big toenail from cutting through the sheepskin upper & 3) the height of the sole is taller, therefore giving the wearer a little more space between puddles and the sheepskin upper (an important consideration for swimmers, water polo players and hockey moms).

Are they waterproof?
They are water resistant. Like any leather, if you stand in a puddle long enough, they will get wet. The lanolin in the skins is responsible for their natural repellency. In cold snow, they do fine. They are not rain boots. They are not recommended in springtime slush. To enhance their water resistancy, spray with any non-silicon water repellent spray. By doing so, the boots are easier to clean if slightly soiled.

I live where it snows. What’s the best boot for me?
Any one of our sidewall stitch boots (sewn on soles). Both the Ugg® Ultra and any of the Sheep Dogs™ side-wall-stitch boots are good. All have good traction on slick surfaces. The sheepskin upper is about an inch above classic boots, so they won’t get wet as easily. The Ultra has mylar under the insole to keep the heat of the foot in and is rated comfortable to the bare foot at -20°F.

I live near the beach. What’s the best boot for me?
Definitely any of the classic styles (as described above). This was the original construction. It is lighter weight than the sidewall stitch and feels more slipper-like. It is the choice of the surfers.

Re: The Soft Sole- Can I wear these outside?
Yes. The soles will get shiny and hard, like that of a moccasin. They are not meant to go out for walks or shopping, but they can withstand jaunts to get the paper for years and years. This slipper passes the couch test. You don’t treat them like a shoe (as you would hardsoles) and you don’t hesitate putting them up on the couch. That’s a slipper!

How do I fit my child into an Ugg boot?
We carry child sizes 5/6 through 4. The 5/6 approximately fits a 2 yr. old and the 4 if for kids about 8 or 9. The object is for the boot to last two seasons. Small children (sizes 6 through 11) can usually fit into boots 1 to 1 1/2 sizes too big. Children, sized 12-3, should go up just one size. If they’re too big, they will trip. Kids can be pretty rough on sheepskin boots. We’ll take returns on manufacturers’ defects but not on wear issues with kid’s boots.

I want to wear these with socks, so why can’t I try them on with socks?
Sheepskin boots and slippers both mat down and stretch quickly. Trying them barefoot gives us the best idea of how the fit will be once they’ve stretched. They should fit comfortably snug barefoot
